Boulevard Brewing to sell ‘Gordo’s Golden Ale’ beer in honor of former Royals star
Given his reputation for healthy eating, it seems unlikely former Royals left fielder Alex Gordon tipped back many beers during his playing days.
Now that he’s retired, Gordon can enjoy a cold one with friends, and perhaps his beverage of choice will be a beer that was created in his honor.
The Boulevard Brewing Company sold “Gordo’s Golden Ale” at Kauffman Stadium last year, but it is now releasing six packs of 12-oz. cans of the special beer, and it also will be on draft in the Midwest region.
This is a limited release, as the beer will be available from March to July.
Boulevard said a portion of the proceeds from the beer will be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, a nonprofit organization which funds research and raises awareness to help cure childhood cancer.
“It is a real joy to have the Royals and Boulevard Brewing Company come together to create this beer for baseball fans to enjoy this season,” Gordon said in a release. “The fact that we can use this partnership to help raise money and awareness for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a charity that is near and dear to my heart, makes it even more special. I can’t wait to crack one open and cheer on my former teammates this season.”
The cans have Gordon’s jersey No. 4 and an iconic image of Gordon rounding the bases after his game-tying home run in Game 1 of the 2015 World Series. The Royals logo and an image of a player blowing a bubble (another Gordon trademark) are also on the can.
Boulevard said the beer has a 4.6% ABV and “delivers a honey-like malt sweetness that gives way to a crisp clean finish with a touch of herbal hop flavor.”
Gordon, who won eight Gold Glove awards in a 14-year career, retired following the 2020 season.
“As the official craft beer of the Kansas City Royals, we felt it was only right to honor and celebrate Alex with his own beer,” Bobby Dykstra, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Boulevard’s parent company Duvel Moortgat USA, said in a news release. “A beer that is classic, balanced and refreshing is something we felt was a beer not only baseball fans would enjoy, but Alex himself.”
