Sports financial expert explains why Allen Robinson could be good fit for the Chiefs

Earlier in his career, wide receiver Allen Robinson drew comparisons to the likes of Cris Carter, Fred Biletnikoff and John Stallworth on Pro Football Reference’s “Similar Players” list.

But during the 2021 season, Robinson appeared in 12 games with the Bears and had 38 receptions for 410 yards and a touchdown. That followed a pair of 1,000-yard receiving seasons while Mitch Trubisky was Chicago’s quarterback.

A former Pro Bowler, Robinson is expected to be a free agent. And he might be a perfect fit for the Chiefs, says Mike Ginnitti, the managing editor of Spotrac, which contains salary information for pro athletes.

During an interview last week with Carrington Harrison on KCSP (610 AM), Ginnitti explained why.

“Allen Robinson is on this list for me because he’s going to be looking for a showcase deal. He flamed out of Chicago. He was on track for 20 million a year,” Ginnitti said. “He’s going to be on a one-year something-of-a-good value deal. And I think that’s right in Kansas City’s wheelhouse if they like the fit there.“

Ginnitti believes the Chiefs could lure Robinson to Kansas City to be the team’s No. 2 wide receiver by offering a one-year $10 million deal that could be worth up to $16 million with incentives.

The Chiefs could use a No. 2 wide receiver who could take the pressure off receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, and give quarterback Patrick Mahomes another option.

So Ginnitti offered another potential solution if the Chiefs aren’t interested in Rob.

“Other than that, I’m flipping the switch to the trade option for this team. And I like how Kansas City has operated in this mode over the past couple of seasons,” he said. “There’s some real names that I think could be considered for trades in terms of wide receivers. (The Browns’) Jarvis Landry, (Texans’) Brandin Cooks, (Falcons’) Calvin Ridley, (Panthers’) DJ Moore, (Cowboys’) Amari Cooper, that’s five off the top of my head, and those are all legitimate WR2s to go with Tyreek Hill.

“And you bring them in to restructure their contracts to make it work for you, and you’ve really got something cooking with Mahomes. So I do think the trade option for the wide receiver might be the better avenue.”

Ginnitti was asked what the Chiefs could get for offering a second-round draft pick. He believes that pick and someone of value (perhaps defensive end Frank Clark) could land the Panthers’ Moore or maybe even the Falcons’ Ridley.
