Tyrann Mathieu reiterates desire to stay with Chiefs: ‘We’ve created so much history’
The start of the NFL league year and free agency is March 16, so for now at least, safety Tyrann Mathieu remains with the Chiefs.
As an unrestricted free agent, Mathieu will be free to sign with any team now that his three-year contract with the Chiefs is set to expire.
On Thursday night, Mathieu emphatically repeated his desire to stay with the Chiefs.
“Yeah, I’m blessed, man. I feel great,” Mathieu said in an interview on the NFL Network before the NFL Honors show. “Obviously, the hope and the dream is to continue to be a Kansas City Chief. We’ve created so much history the last couple of years.”
During his three years with the team, the Chiefs have been in three AFC Championship Games, two Super Bowls and won a Lombardi Trophy.
Mathieu was told to look into the camera and repeat what he hopes will happen.
“I want to be in Kansas City and I think everybody knows that,” Mathieu said.
Mathieu was the Chiefs’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. While he didn’t end up winning (it went to Rams’ tackle Andrew Whitworth), Mathieu spoke about being nominated.
“It’s one of the highest honors in the league, obviously to represent the Payton family would mean a lot,” Mathieu said. “But mostly just trying to represent my teammates, represent the Kansas City community, you know, the right way.”
Sports anchor Harold Kuntz of Fox 4 shared this clip of the interview.
