For Pete's Sake

Tyrann Mathieu’s Twitter messages have Chiefs fans fearful he is leaving Kansas City

The Chiefs’ decision to give safety Tyrann Mathieu a three-year, $42 million contract ahead of the 2019 season was a wise one.

Mathieu has been a key part of a team that is enjoying the most successful run in franchise history. But Mathieu is also set to be a free agent, and he got choked up Sunday when asked about his future following the Chiefs’ loss in the AFC Championship Game.

While Mathieu said he hopes to stay, Chiefs fans weren’t so sure that was going to happen because of something he tweeted on Monday: listing his accomplishments.

Was Mathieu listing all he has accomplished (and most of that was with the Chiefs) to make a case for getting a new contract to stay in Kansas City? Or was it his way of saying he is planning to leave and “here’s all I did when I was with the Chiefs?”

Another tweet, in response to former Chiefs reporter BJ Kissel, seemed more final.

“I leave with a grateful heart having got the chance to play for all you good people!” read part of Mathieu’s post.

Two words he typed — “I leave” — had Chiefs fans certain Mathieu was leaving and some thanked him for all he’s done with the team. Here is a sample of what was being said on Twitter.

What did you think about that message from Mathieu?
