Chiefs’ Reid wanted review to see if Bengals fumbled in OT. Here’s what replay shows.
CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo and rules analyst Gene Steratore speculated about why Chiefs coach Andy Reid was speaking to officials in overtime of Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.
The network duo thought Reid was asking about an illegal formation on what was a 13-yard rush by Cincinnati’s Joe Mixon that moved the ball to the Chiefs’ 12-yard line.
Turns out it wasn’t anything to do with the Bengals’ formation. Reid wanted to see if Mixon had fumbled.
“I was wondering what they were gonna say about that, yes,” Reid said. “You can’t challenge right there, but I had a chance to talk to them (the officials). And they said he gave himself up.”
All review in overtime are initiated by the officials, but they didn’t take a second look at the play.
Did Mixon give himself up? Did a whistle blow? It’s hard to tell. But it is clear that after Mixon was down, he got up and dropped the ball. The Chiefs’ L’Jarius Sneed raced in and picked it up.
It also appears that Mixon wasn’t touched on this play (video from Twitter user Jakewagarb), so a case could be made that it should have been a fumble:
Update: This video from Jomboy shows Chiefs’ defensive end Melvin Ingram actually recovered the ball.
