Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes ran in circle in the pocket before throwing TD pass to Kelce
It’s not a hard-and-fast rule, but generally it’s inadvisable for a quarterback to turn his back to the line of scrimmage, even while trying to avoid the rush.
But it worked out for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium.
That’s not unusual, right? Mahomes seems to have a sixth sense in the pocket that allows him to make special plays like this one.
Mahomes was under pressure after taking a snap from the Bengals’ 5-yard line in the second quarter. He stepped up and wanted to cut in one direction but found his path blocked by a Cincinnati defender.
So Mahomes ran to his right, found some space and threw a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce. This was spectacular.
The NFL’s Next Gen Stats shared that Mahomes ran 29.6 yards, and took 7.94 seconds to throw the ball. Next Gen Stats said it was the longest time to throw on a touchdown pass in Mahomes’ career.
