Despite all the talk about how opposing teams had “figured out” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes this season or that he was “broken,” he put up monster stats once again.

Mahomes completed 66.3% of his passes for 4,839 yards, 37 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The interceptions were a career-worst, but the percentage of his passes that were intercepted (2.0%) was lower than in 2018 (2.1%) when he was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.

The number of completions (436) was a career high for Mahomes, and the NFL’s Next Gen Stats revealed the five that were the most improbable.

No. 5: TD pass to Byron Pringle vs. Bills

Completion probability: 28.1%

Target separation: 1.1 yards

Mahomes threw a laser to Pringle for a 5-yard touchdown pass that gave the Chiefs a 10-7 lead over the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 10. It would the last time the Chiefs would be ahead as the Bills won 38-20.

No. 4: TD pass to Tyreek Hill vs. Giants

Completion probability: 26.5%

Target separation: 0.7 yards

The Chiefs were in the red zone in the first quarter of a “Monday Night Football” game against the New York Giants, and Mahomes appeared ready to run when he spotted Hill for the score. The Chiefs won 20-17.

No. 3: TD pass to Darrel Williams vs. Raiders

Completion probability: 25.8%

Target separation: 0.3 yards

This was one of the best plays of the year as Mahomes was again preparing to take off running when he threw the ball up to Williams, who snagged it over the Raiders safety for a 38-yard touchdown. KC rolled to a 41-14 victory.

No. 2: A 26-yard pass to Mecole Hardman vs. Bills

Completion probability: 25.7%

Target separation: 0.2 yards

Late in the first half of the game against Buffalo, Hardman hauled in this pass that was originally ruled not a catch. But replay showed he wasn’t out of bounds and it was an excellent pass and catch.

No. 1: A 40-yard pass to Tyreek Hill vs. Chargers

Completion probability: 21.1%

Target separation: 0.6 yards

Pass interference was called on this play, but it didn’t matter because Hill made an amazing catch during the third quarter of the Chiefs’ game at SoFi Stadium on Dec. 16. It was a perfect throw and better reception in the Chiefs’ 34-28 overtime victory.

Here’s video of each completion from the Chiefs.
