Andy Reid tied Marty Schottenheimer in regular-season wins for a KC Chiefs coach
Not only was the Chiefs’ 34-28 overtime win over the Chargers on “Thursday Night Football” huge for Kansas City’s chances of winning the AFC West, but it was historically significant, too.
The Chiefs’ Andy Reid got his 231st career regular-season victory as a coach, and it was his 101st with the Chiefs. The latter tied him for the second-most wins in Chiefs history with the late Marty Schottenheimer.
Under Schottenheimer, the Chiefs had a winning record in all but one season from 1989 to 1998. The Chiefs had six seasons with double-digit victories in that span.
Schottenheimer, who died in February at the age of 77, is a member of the Chiefs’ Hall of Honor.
The Chiefs shared a look at coaches with the most regular-season wins:
1. 124 Hank Stram
2t. 101 Marty Schottenheimer
2t. 101 Andy Reid
4. 44 Dick Vermeil
5. 31 Marv Levy
Tying Marty Schottenheimer is a special accomplishment, and it came after a heart-stopping victory at SoFi Stadium in California. Reid was asked by reporters what the feeling was on the sideline.
“It’s kind of crazy. Until the moment has ended, you’re just tunneled in on the gameplan,” Reid said. “You’re just trying to find the next thing that you think might work. Then, when it’s over, you go, ‘Woah.’ If I could jump, I would jump with excitement. That locker room was great.
“It was phenomenal. The guys after every play, it was like a walk-off home run in baseball. When you have a walk-off like that and a celebration, you look over and see the guys jumping around. Knowing all of the hard work that goes into it, that’s satisfying.”
