There is a grassroots movement to get Chiefs’ Creed Humphrey rookie of the year award
In the second quarter of their 41-14 win over the Raiders on Sunday, the Chiefs faced a second-and-9 play from the Las Vegas 33-yard line.
Tight end Travis Kelce initially pass blocked before peeling off to catch a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kelce rambled for a 12-yard gain and found space to run, thanks to rookie center Creed Humphrey.
After waiting for the catch, Humphrey started down field and looked for someone to block and he obliterated Raiders safety Dallin Leavitt. Former Chiefs lineman Mitchell Schwartz shared this video that showed Humphrey knocked Leavitt back 5 yards:
Humphrey, a second-round pick out of Oklahoma, has not only been good for a rookie, he’s one of the top-four highest graded offensive linemen in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus.
PFF also said Humphrey is the highest graded center through the first 10 weeks of the season since 2006.
Humphrey is on pace to join an elite list of rookies, who were the best at their position in their first year in the NFL.
That’s an impressive list, right? That’s why there is a movement afoot to get Humphrey’s name in the running for the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year award.
Cody Tapp of KCSP (610 AM) recorded a song about Humphrey, pushing his case as the NFL’s top rookie.
Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders on Tuesday shared a Twitter poll about rookie of the year candidates.
Shortly after that, Schatz added Humphrey’s name to the poll, and the Chiefs rookie won handily.
Fans, and at least one Chiefs player, pushed Humphrey for the award:
Humphrey faces a long road to winning. Sports Betting Dime gives him +15000 odds, which is tied for 14th on the list.
