Here is who national experts are predicting will win Kansas City Chiefs-Giants game
There will be a chill in the air near the end of the Chiefs’ game against the Giants on Monday night as temperatures are expected to drop into the 30s. There may be some rain, too.
But will the Chiefs be able to warm the hearts of fans who are worried about Kansas City’s 3-4 start to the season?
Here is what 60 NFL media members are saying about the game, which kicks off at 7:15 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 and KMBC (Ch. 9).
A 34-23 Chiefs victory is the prediction from Bill Bender of the Sporting News. Here is an excerpt from his story: “What in the world is going on with the two-time defending AFC champion Chiefs? That question will continue to bubble up, but Patrick Mahomes should return against a Giants team dealing with its own injury issues.”
A Chiefs win is the prediction from the New York Times’ Emmanuel Morgan. Here is a snippet from the story: “It is as if the NFL schedule makers foresaw that Kansas City (3-4) would struggle this season and offered the team get-right games immediately after its toughest matchups. Patrick Mahomes is now tied for the league lead in interceptions (9), while the Giants’ Daniel Jones has played relatively responsibly compared with previous seasons.”
A 38-20 Chiefs win is the call from Yardbarker’s Chris Mueller. This is an excerpt from his story: “No team has more turnovers than Kansas City’s 17 this year, and Patrick Mahomes looked terrible against the Titans before exiting the game and going through the concussion protocol. Some of Kansas City’s giveaway issues are bad luck; per Pro Football Focus, Mahomes’ rate of turnover-worthy plays this year is 2.6%, which is actually down from last year’s rate of 2.8%. At some point, the offense’s run of bad luck should even out. That said, the defense has no such excuse, and might not have any answers, either.”
A blowout Chiefs win is the prediction from both Pro Football Talk writers. Mike Florio sees a 38-17 score. He wrote: “The Chiefs are good enough to beat the bad teams, but they’ve currently lost their ability to beat the good ones.” Michael David Smith predicted a 40-14 final. He wrote: “The Chiefs just have to turn things around eventually, don’t they? I’ll pick them to blow out the Giants.”
The Chiefs will win, say seven of eight CBS Sports writers: Pete Prisco, Dave Richard, Jamey Eisenberg, John Breech, Ryan Wilson, Will Brinson and Jared Dubin. The lone pick for the Giants: Jason La Canfora. Prisco sees a 33-16 final score. This is part of what he wrote: “This should be a get-right game for the Chiefs. The defense isn’t good, but it’s the poor play of the offense that has surprised some. This will be their time to get it turned around.”
A 30-22 Chiefs victory is the prediction from Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com. Here is a snippet from his story: “The (Giants) defense dominating last week was likely a Sam Darnold mirage, but Daniel Jones is playing well enough to compete each week, especially if he can get more of his receivers back.”
The Chiefs were the pick from the eight Athletic writers: Chris Burke, Tashan Reed, Katherine Terrell, Jay Morrison, Ted Nguyen, Mark Kaboly, Ben Standig and Nick Kosmider. This is part of what Zachary Pekale wrote: “Oddsmakers like Kansas City to get back to .500 this week, having the Chiefs open as 9.5-point favorites against the Giants. But how much does that mean? The Chiefs have been favored every week and have a 2-5 record against the spread.”
A 35-20 Chiefs win is the call from Ben Rolfe of Pro Football Network .Here is part of what he wrote: “There is every chance this matchup sees the Giants become a sacrificial lamb to an angry Chiefs team. Kansas City was just humiliated by the Titans. Furthermore, their shot at a bye in the AFC playoffs hangs by a thread given their four losses.”
All six writers for NJ.com picked the Chiefs. Joe Giglio, who predicted a 29-27 score, wrote: “Yes, the Giants have a chance here. But can we take the Chiefs seriously ever again if they can’t beat the Giants? No way.”
Each of the 10 pundits at ESPN believe the Chiefs will win: Emmanuel Acho, Matt Bowen, Mike Clay, Jeremy Fowler, Domonique Foxworth, Laura Rutledge, Dan Graziano, Rob Ninkovich, Kevin Seifert and Seth Wickersham.
A Chiefs victory is the prediction from four of Audacy’s five writers: John Healy, Jordan Cohn, Jesse Pantuosco and Tim Kelly. The pick for Giants: Dan Mennella.
Six of seven writers at USA Today see the Chiefs winning: Jarrett Bell (34-24 final score), Nate Davis (31-23), Jori Epstein (35-20), Mike Jones (27-19), Mike Middlehurst-Schwartz (31-20) and Lorenzo Reyes (26-22). Going with the Giants is Mike Freeman (20-17).
Four of the five Sports Illustrated writers picked the Chiefs: Gary Grammling, Jenny Vrentas, Albert Breer and Mitch Goldich. Predicting a Giants win is Conor Orr.
A Chiefs victory is the pick from each of the four Athlon Sports writers: Rob Doster, Bryan Fischer, Ben Weinrib and Aaron Wilson.
