Flaw in Major League Baseball’s replay system was exposed in Braves-Brewers game
In the end, this didn’t hurt the Atlanta Braves as they beat the Brewers 5-4 in Game 4 of their National League Division Series on Tuesday night and advanced to the NLCS.
But with Milwaukee leading in the fourth inning, an obvious mistake by the umpiring crew allowed the Brewers to record an out on a ball that clearly hit the ground.
Major League Baseball’s website has this description of the play: “Umpire reviewed (rules check), call on the field was upheld: Adam Duvall pops out to third baseman Luis Urias in foul territory.”
This is the play:
What a catch, right? Thing is, it wasn’t, as Jomboy’s Twitter video shows:
The Braves asked to challenge the play and the umpires did that rules check, which shows that particular play could not be reviewed.
This is from MLB’s list of plays that can be reviewed: “Catch plays in the outfield: An umpire’s decision whether a fielder caught a fly ball or a line drive in flight in the outfield before it hit the ground is reviewable, but fly balls or line drives fielded by a defensive player in the infield is not eligible for review.”
To recap: This catch wasn’t a catch but the umpires couldn’t review it even though they reviewed it.
Knights slay Kraken twice
The expansion Seattle Kraken lost their first NHL game on Tuesday night, as the Las Vegas Golden Knights won 4-3 at home.
The biggest highlight of the night was Las Vegas’ pregame show in which the Golden Knights mascot slayed a kraken coming up from under the ice. This video from The Athletic’s Jesse Granger is epic:
Colts dynasty is coming
Indianapolis blew a 19-point second-half lead in a 31-25 overtime loss to the Ravens on Monday night, but Colts owner Jim Irsay had a positive message for fans.
Irsay tweeted Tuesday night that the Colts would win two Super Bowls before the decade is out. This promise isn’t quite as bold as John F. Kennedy’s plan to put a man on the moon, but it’s close.
Inspirational goal
Brian Boyle scored for the Penguins in their 6-2 win over the Lightning in the first game of 2021-22 NHL season on Tuesday night.
Penguins centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are out so the team turned to Boyle and he delivered against Tampa Bay.
Not bad for a guy who wasn’t on the team earlier this week. In fact, Boyle wasn’t even in the NHL last season.
