This country loves its award shows.

How else to explain the ESPYs becoming a big deal? ESPN’s annual self-promotion show is July 15 where it will hand out a number of Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Awards.

The Royals are finalists for a pair of awards.

One nomination is for Best Game, which was the Royals’ victory over Oakland in last year’s Wild Card Game. Think anyone will mention that when the Royals play the A’s this weekend? The other finalists are the Super Bowl (Patriots over Seahawks) and game seven of the NBA’s Western Conference final (Spurs vs. Clippers).

The other candidates are the NBA as well as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick? This seems like a slam-dunk win for the Royals.

In the Best Upset category, the Royals’ winning the AL pennant is up against Georgia State’s victory over Baylor in the NCAA Tournament and Mississippi’s win over Alabama in college football.

Unfortunately, for Royals fans, San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner is a finalist for Best Championship Performance.
