Jerry Jones says Cowboys had their eye on Clyde Edwards-Helaire in draft
The Dallas Cowboys have a pretty good running back in Ezekiel Elliott, but that didn’t stop owner Jerry Jones from hoping to land another in the draft.
Unfortunately for Jones, the Chiefs swooped in and took LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd overall pick.
Jones expressed his desire to add Edwads-Helaire, who has rushed for 240 yards with 102 receiving yards this season, while on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. Jones was asked Tuesday if sees a major gap between the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs, 3-0, and the Cowboys, 1-2.
“Yes, I see a team that is clicking, they’re the Super Bowl champs and they look like they got better — the running back is outstanding, I watched him live last year at LSU,” Jones said.
“I was watching my grandson (John) play. At that particular time, I loved him. I loved him in the draft. I was dreaming that he might get over into the second and somehow be around where we could look at him. He’s an exceptional player.”
With Edwards-Helaire off the board, Dallas selected cornerback Trevon Diggs in the second round (51st overall).
Jones also talked about how well Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is playing.
“And obviously with their quarterback, who I think is at the highest level right now because of his, frankly, as much as just his natural ability to make plays, his mobility,” Jones said. “And this guy’s very quick and elusive and can get in and out of situations with his feet and buy time.”
