For Pete's Sake

Patrick Mahomes’ mother shares cute photo of him meeting Derek Jeter as a kid

One of former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter’s nicknames was Captain Clutch.

Whether or not you believe a pro athlete can elevate her or his game in a big moment is not universally agreed upon, but Jeter had a career .308 average over his 158 playoff games. He also had an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of 1.055 or better in nine different postseason series.

So it carried a bit of weight with people when Jeter, who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame, penned an essay about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people.

Jeter wrote about Mahomes’ leadership on and off the field. Those words touched Mahomes’ mother, Randi, who shared an adorable photo of when Jeter and Mahomes met on the baseball field.

It appears to be from around the 2000-01 season when Mahomes’ father was pitching for the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. That would make Mahomes about 5 or 6 years old. This is a cute photo:

Who could have imagined when that photo was snapped that Jeter would one day write about Mahomes’ greatness?
