Memes of Dr. Nick from ‘The Simpsons’ shared after news of Chargers doctor’s mistake
At first blush, it seemed Chargers coach Anthony Lynn on Sunday had successfully hidden his decision to promote rookie Justin Herbert to starting quarterback.
But soon after kickoff of the Chiefs-Chargers game, it was reported LA quarterback Tyrod Taylor was actually injured. Herbert played well Sunday but Lynn was adamant the change wouldn’t be permanent.
“He’s a backup for a reason,” Lynn told reporters about Herbert. “He’s a rookie. And there’s a lot that he needs to learn about this game.”
Some fans thought that was a bit harsh, but the reason for Lynn’s insistence to stick with Taylor became clear Wednesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Chargers’ team doctor accidentally punctured Taylor’s lung while giving a pain-killing injection to the quarterback’s cracked rib.
Taylor was taken to a hospital during Sunday’s game, and fortunately he was released that day.
Still, George Atallah, assistant director of external affairs for the NFL Players Association, said an investigation has been started.
Meanwhile, many NFL fans made jokes about the Chargers team doctor and compared him to Dr. Nick Riviera, the comically inept physician from “The Simpsons.” Yes, there were plenty of memes:
