Cousin of rapper Nelly sentenced for defrauding former Chiefs player out of $250,000
A Missouri man was sentenced last week to 15 months in prison for defrauding former Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr out of $250,000, per multiple reports.
The Baltimore Sun reported earlier this year that Abayomi Jamil “Yomi” Martin of O’Fallon made false claims of ownership in an apparel company, Famous Nobodys through a holding company. The Sun story says Martin told Carr and Carr’s business manager that Carr would get 17.5% ownership interest in the holding company with a $250,000 investment.
In September 2016, Carr wired the money into a bank account controlled by Martin, the Sun reported.
Fox 2 News in St. Louis said Martin used Carr’s money to pay credit card bills, fund professional boxers in Las Vegas and for a down payment on a house.
The Post-Dispatch reported the court in St. Louis also ruled Martin must repay the $250,000 to Carr and $11,000 to credit card companies.
During a sentencing hearing held via Zoom, per the Post-Dispatch, Martin said, “I made a huge mistake and I realize the hurt that I’ve caused.”
The Post-Dispatch story said Martin’s lawyer asked for probation or house arrest so Martin could repay the money owed Carr.
The Sun story noted that Martin’s cousin is rapper Nelly, but that the two “no longer had a business relationship.”
Carr, 34, is currently with the Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted by the Chiefs in 2008 and had eight interceptions in four seasons.
