For Pete's Sake

Chiefs’ Red Friday flags go on sale next week. Here’s where and when to get one.

The Chiefs will kick off the 2020 NFL season on Sept. 10 against the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium.

That’s a Thursday, so the team will make a slight alteration to the annual Red Friday celebration — it will be held Wednesday.

The Red Friday flag, which is usually in high demand and sells out quickly, will have “a special championship design theme.“ It will be on sale at McDonald’s restaurants in Kansas City and St. Joseph (starting at 5 a.m. at these locations), along with Kansas City-area Hy-Vee stores.

The flags will be available for a donation of at least $5, and the Chiefs said in a news release there will be an effort to minimize contact during cash transactions, so no change will be given. The Chiefs are encouraging fans to use “exactly $5 cash per flag or be willing to make a donation above $5 if they use larger bills.”

For fans who wish to shop at home, flags will be available for a minimum donation of $10 at shop.chiefs.com on Wednesday. That amount includes shipping.

Net proceeds from the flag sales will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City.

The Chiefs said last year’s flag sales raised more than $500,000. Over seven years, more than $1.8 million has been raised.

“We have an incredible opportunity to use the platform around the NFL Kickoff Game to highlight the amazing work that RMHC-KC does for kids and families while generating excitement and energy for the players and coaches to feel and the world to see,” Chiefs president Mark Donovan said in a news release.

These flags will be sold:

Here are other events that will take place leading up to kickoff:

Thursday: KC Wolf will place Chiefs jerseys on statues in Westport.

Friday: Super Bowl LIV champions logos will be painted throughout the city.

Tuesday: Chiefs murals will be unveiled, including one in the Power & Light District. The Bartle Hall Pylons, Union Station, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and Marriott Downtown all will be lit in red.

Wednesday: The water in the Mill Creek park fountain, the Northland fountain, the Meyer Circle fountain and the Crown Center fountain will be dyed red. Also, the Waldo Tower will be lit red.
