Budweiser is making unique can to honor Reds pitcher who set team record
The “hold my beer” statement has been a staple on social media as people share how situations can get better (or often worse).
Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer used that phrase after teammate Sonny Gray struck out 45 batters over a five-game stretch. Bauer was prepared to best that.
Here’s what he tweeted:
Budweiser saw that and made Bauer an offer. Beat that mark and the company would put out a special can to honor Cincinnati.
Bauer said he’d go for it.
Last Wednesday, Bauer struck out eight in a win against the Royals, then had 12 strikeouts in Monday’s game against the Brewers. That gave him 49 in his first five games, erasing Gray’s name from the Reds record book.
When he bested his teammate, Bauer pretended to drink a cold one.
Budweiser tweeted this after the record was set:
After the game, Bauer told MLB.com that he would have enjoyed the special achievement more if the Reds hadn’t lost 4-2 to the Brewers.
“If you’re going to do it when you’re pitching well and enjoy it, then when you do it and you lose, you have to kind of wear it,” Bauer said. “Not the ideal outcome for it. I try to make my starts entertaining. I try to give people a reason to tune in. I try to bring attention to the team and what we’re trying to do. Happy to get that. I think it’s going to be a cool thing for the fans. Obviously, it doesn’t matter at all given that we lost. Would much rather have struck out zero and won.”
It could be a marketing ploy, but it was a fun exchange between Bauer and Budweiser.
