Harrison Butker missed a 69-yard field goal attempt at Chiefs camp by mere inches
Imagine this scenario: just 3 seconds to play in the first half of a game and the Chiefs have the ball on the opposing team’s 48-yard line.
What would you prefer to see? A Hail Mary from Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes or a 65-yard field goal attempt from Harrison Butker?
Nearly everyone would say the Mahomes’ bomb, but if the conditions were right, Butker might be able to make a field goal from that length. The NFL record, held by Matt Prater, is 64 yards.
On Saturday, Butker made some long-range kicks during a training camp practice at Arrowhead Stadium. Afterward, he was asked what his range might be.
“Warming up, I thought around 55-58 yards was where I could do my normal swing but obviously that was at the very beginning of practice,” Butker told reporters. “I think as practice went on, I kept dialing it in and finding the sweet spot. In the period, we made a 62-yarder and a 69-yarder that bounced off the crossbar. I’m feeling really good.”
Yep, a 69-yard field goal attempt nearly cleared the bar. These are not great views, but here is the kick:
