For Pete's Sake

‘Lots to celebrate.’ Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith returns to practice with Washington

In announcing the news that quarterback Alex Smith had been cleared to return to practice, the Washington Football Team portrayed him as a superhero.

Who could argue with that?

Less than 24 months after two bones in his right leg were broken during a terrifying on-field play, the former Chiefs quarterback was officially given the all-clear to join his teammates at training camp.

Surgery to repair the broken bones went well for Smith, but horrific complications soon followed. Sepsis nearly killed Smith, and a flesh-eating bacteria required more than a half-dozen surgeries that removed a portion of his leg, leaving his bone visible.

After 17 total surgeries and once his life was no longer in danger, Smith went to work.

Smith, who made three Pro Bowls during his five seasons with the Chiefs, visited the Center for the Intrepid, a facility in San Antonio that helps soldiers wounded in combat. ESPN’s “Project 11” documentary detailed the difficult recovery road for Smith and his family, but it ended on a high note, showing him playing with his kids.

Last month he rejoined Washington, but he was on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and had to practice off to the side. That’s no longer the case, as Washington announced Sunday:

Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, wrote in an Instagram post: “Hard work pays off! Lots to celebrate in the Smith house tonight.” She shared this video of the family celebrating the news of his return to action:
