Two KC authors have written children’s books about Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship
Just weeks after the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV, commemorative books about their title season had hit the shelves.
It took a little longer for children’s books to be released, but a pair have been penned by Kansas City authors.
Chris Meggs wrote “Go Chiefs Go! The Championship Season of The Kansas City Chiefs,” while Jason Sivewright’s book is titled “The Night The Kingdom Rose Again.”
Here’s a bit more about each book.
“Go Chiefs Go!”
Meggs had a feeling this might be the Chiefs’ year, so he talked with his publisher about writing a book if they won the Super Bowl. However, he didn’t begin writing until the first playoff game to avoid jinxing the season.
But when the Chiefs fell behind 24-0 against the Texans in the AFC Divisional playoff game, Meggs thought it was because he had started on the book, which recaps the season beginning at training camp.
“Then they came back and I thought maybe I can finish the rest of (the book),” Meggs said. “And then the second playoff game I was like, ‘Man, I thought I really did, I thought I jinxed them.’ But then they pulled it out so then we just kind of held our breath and were on pins and needles for the whole Super Bowl.”
The illustrations by Rob Peters capture the highs (Damien Williams’ touchdown to put the Chiefs ahead in Super Bowl LIV) and lows (Patrick Mahomes’ dislocated kneecap).
“I’ve been getting all kinds of positive feedback on it,” Meegs said. “And it’s weird because I hear from Chiefs fans from really all over the world. I got a guy that messaged me from the U.K. And he was excited to order it and when he got it told me how much he loved it. That’s awesome. Not quite what I was expecting so it’s really kind of cool.”
The book is official licensed by the Chiefs and can purchased here.
The Night The Kingdom Rose Again
Sivewright immortalized the Royals’ epic win in the 2014 Wild Card Game with a kid’s book titled “The Night The World Turned Royal Blue.” A year later, the Royals won the World Series and he wrote “The Year A Royal Dream Came True.”
“People asked us after we did the Royals books, are you guys going to do a Chiefs book?” Sivewright said. “The story just had to be good. It kind of wrote itself as the season went along, especially the playoff run. As they kept coming back and winning those games, people kept on contacting us over Facebook and Twitter saying, ‘You guys have to write a book.’
“Of course when they won the Super Bowl, it really kind of iced it. That’s when we really started to work on it, the day after the Super Bowl.”
The book is illustrated by Kristen and Kevin Howdeshell, and features animals playing for the Chiefs. But it’s clear to see Mahomes, Andy Reid and the others.
“People have other things on their mind other than children’s books about football games but Chiefs fans are awesome,” Sivewright said. “Nothing but positive feedback.”
Sivewright said 10% of proceeds from the book will go to Children’s Mercy Hospital. You can order it here.
