For Pete's Sake

St. Louis’ new MLS team accidentally leaked its name and crest before unveiling

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Louis’ expansion team in Major League Soccer won’t start play until 2023.

It originally intended to join the league in 2022, but sometimes things don’t go as planned.

For example, the team’s crest and name accidentally was released ahead of the team’s official unveiling on Thursday.

Intrepid Twitter user Jonathan Slape went to the St. Louis MLS team’s YouTube page, which showed the name and logo. A short while later this image was removed:

So ... St. Louis City SC it is.

The official announcement came a short while later.

KMOX radio in St. Louis reported the lines through the Gateway Arch are representative of the Mississippi, Missouri and Meramec rivers, while “SC” can stand for both “Soccer Club” and “Soccer Capital.”

“Our club represents East of the river and West of 270,” the team said in a statement, per KMOX. “We are Old North and South County. We are the heart of a vibrant midtown and soul of a historic downtown.”
