Royals relief pitcher Scott Barlow is residing in a camper this season
Royals right-hander Scott Barlow spent most of the 2019 season with the Royals, save for a short spell with Triple-A Omaha.
That means more than just playing in games at two levels of professional baseball. A player has to have a place to rest his head each night, so securing living quarters sometimes can be a challenge for anyone who doesn’t spend a whole season with one team.
In 2018, Barlow spent time with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Omaha and the Royals. Earlier in his career, Barlow played in California, Michigan, Utah and Oklahoma. Such is life for a minor-league player.
Rather deal with the hassle of changing apartments, Barlow tried something new last year.
“Me and my wife, we decided to get a fifth-wheel camper and try that out instead of going the apartment route,” Barlow said last week on Fox Sports Kansas City. “In the apartments, it is nice, you get a homey feel, but then again you’re pretty much changing apartments every year depending on the availability, so we decided let’s try out a fifth-wheel camper and see how that works out and we love it.”
This is nothing like living in a van down by the river, of course. Barlow and his wife and their two dogs share the spacious camper.
“We did it all last year and did it again this year. It’s more of a homey feel because you’re staying there ever year. You can use it in the offseason as well,” Barlow said. “Take it on some trips, which is really cool. Just coming home to the same environment I think is a huge, huge plus.”
