Unlike some 49ers fans, Nick Bosa doesn’t blame Super Bowl loss on the officials
In the days following the Chiefs’ 31-20 win in Super Bowl LIV, some San Francisco 49ers fans believed “2-3 Jet Chip Wasp” should never have counted.
That play, which resulted in a 44-yard completion from Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill, started the Chiefs on their comeback from a 10-point deficit.
But a number of San Francisco supporters complained that 49ers defensive star Nick Bosa was held by Eric Fisher. Here’s a small sample of what 49ers fans were saying on Twitter:
However, in an interview with reporters on Thursday, Bosa wasn’t ready to blame the officials for the loss. As for the “Wasp” play, Bosa said officials are human.
“I don’t like thinking about that game very much. I have gone back and watched up until the fourth quarter,” Bosa said Thursday on a video call with reporters. “Was I held? It’s pretty … it comes down to the opinion of a human being and that’s what refs are.
“If they think it’s holding, it’s holding. It could have been, it could not have been. It’s what he thinks. … I’m not going to say that’s the reason we lost the game.”
Bosa’s coach, Kyle Shanahan, thinks “Wasp” is a big play, because it that possession ended with the Chiefs scoring a touchdown to make it a 20-17 game. But Shanahan pointed to the 49ers’ offense being unable to pick up a first down on its next possession as being the turning point.
The Chiefs got the ball back and scored a touchdown to take a lead for good. For the 49ers, the loss still stings six months later.
“I’m not going to blame the ref by any means,” Bosa said. “It’s definitely good motivation. You get there and you’re seven minutes away and a nightmare of a situation happens.”
