Cubs’ Alec Mills clarifies comment about taking joy in beating the Royals

Cubs right-hander Alec Mills made the Royals take notice during and after Monday night’s game at Wrigley Field.

Mills tossed seven shutout innings as Chicago won 2-0, and after the game said he was glad to beat the team that had drafted him and later traded him to the Cubs.

“That was a team that got rid of me a couple years ago. I understand the business,” Mills said, per MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. “My job is to make it hurt whenever I face them again. It took four years for it to happen, but I’m glad it did.”

Mills was drafted by the Royals in the 22nd round in 2012. Five years later, the Royals dealt Mills, who was a minor-leaguer at the time but had made three appearances with the big-league club.

On Wednesday, Mills sought to “clarify” his postgame remark about the Royals. Mills said he was thankful the Royals gave him an opportunity in professional baseball.
