Two photos underscore the closeness of Damien Williams’ go-ahead TD in Super Bowl LIV
The Chiefs announced Wednesday that running back Damien Williams will sit out the 2020 NFL season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Williams’ last game with the Chiefs was one to remember. He scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) as the Chiefs rallied to beat the 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV.
The first score was on a 5-yard touchdown reception from Patrick Mahomes that gave the Chiefs the lead.
The play was reviewed and the touchdown counted, but as Fox Sports’ Troy Aikman noted there wasn’t a down-the-line view of the end zone.
But an Imgur user shared two photos that show Williams appeared to score .. barely. Keep this in mind when looking at the photos, the NFL rulebook says a touchdown is when “the ball is on, above, or behind the plane of the opponents’ goal line (extended) and is in possession of a runner who has advanced from the field of play into the end zone.”
Whew, now that is close.
That score came on a third-down play, so if Williams would have been ruled to have stepped out, the Chiefs would have faced fourth and inches at the end zone.
Mahomes has said the Chiefs would have gone for it.
Fortunately for the Chiefs, they didn’t have to make that call and Williams sealed the win a short while later with a 38-yard touchdown run.
Williams ran for 104 yards in the game and had another 29 yards receiving.
