For Pete's Sake

Nick Heath’s ‘Call of Duty’ teammates heard moment Royals called him to the majors

Outfielder Nick Heath was unwinding after a day of practice at the Royals’ auxiliary camp at T-Bones Stadium on Monday and decided to a play a video game before bed.

It was about 11 p.m. and Heath was deep into “Call of Duty” when his phone buzzed. Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo was on the line.

“I just wanted to let you know, congratulations you just got called up, they’re going to need you in Detroit tomorrow,” Picollo told Heath.

Up until that point, Heath’s attention had been on the game, but the news surprised him.

“And I was kind of just sitting on the phone like what? What did you say?” Heath recalled. “And he repeated it to me and I was like stop playing. No way, no way. So that was a really cool experience and of course I kind of freaked out on the phone for a little bit ... and I kind of had like a little bit speechless.”

When the call with Picollo ended, Heath called his mom ... after finishing the “Call of Duty” game.

In a weird twist, Heath’s gamer teammates got the news of his promotion when he did, hearing Picollo and Heath talking on their headphones.

Heath shared that story on Twitter.

Impressively, Heath’s big moment didn’t affect his “Call of Duty” game as one of the players shared:

Here’s a look at the game:
