Dodgers announcers reference Astros cheating scandal while roasting Jose Altuve
The four-month delay to the start of the Major League Baseball season led some to wonder if the outrage over the Houston Astros cheating scandal would be largely forgotten.
It hasn’t.
Even as baseball returns in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Astros have been reminded that all is not forgiven.
During the 2017 season, the Astros had a video monitor near the dugout with a feed of the center-field camera, and a trash can was banged to signal what pitch was coming to the batter. The Astros won 101 games and the World Series that year.
After the scandal became known in January, Houston players were ridiculed by fans at spring training as well as some major-league players, and that has carried over into the regular season.
Houston beat the Dodgers in the 2017 World Series, and Los Angeles pitcher Joe Kelly took matters into his own hands Tuesday night, throwing at some Astros players. That resulted in an eight-game suspension for Kelly, whose pouty face reaction to outraged Houston players has become a meme.
On Wednesday night, Dodgers announcers Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser took a shot at Astros second baseman Jose Altuve. After Altuve struck out on looking, the Dodgers broadcasters referenced the cheating scandal.
“Perhaps guessing’s something else,” Davis said.
Hershiser added: “Guessing’s harder than knowing.”
