Broncos’ John Elway wants Patrick Mahomes to take active role in Royals ownership

For John Elway, anything that could potentially keep Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ focus off football is a good thing.

The Chiefs are 5-0 in games Mahomes has started against the Broncos. That’s why Elway, the former Denver star and current general manager, joked with reporters Tuesday he thinks it’s great that Mahomes joined the Royals ownership group.

“First of all I hope they hire him in the front office,” Elway said with a laugh. “He can spend half his time over with the Royals. That’s fine with me too.”

It’s been an eventful year for Mahomes, who helped the Chiefs overcome three straight double-digit deficits in the playoffs, including Super Bowl LIV. Mahomes was the game’s MVP, becoming the youngest player in NFL history to win that award and the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award.

Earlier this month, Mahomes signed a $503 million contract extension with the Chiefs, the richest deal in sports history.

“He’s the best football player in the league,” Elway told reporters. “I think it’s a well-deserved contract.”

Elway’s only quibble with the deal: it’s too team friendly.

“As an opponent I wish he would’ve gotten more,” Elway said with a laugh. “I think they underpaid him.”
