For Pete's Sake

Chiefs’ Eric Fisher calls Patrick Mahomes ‘the heartbeat of our team’

Does a half-billion dollars go as far these days as it once did?

Well, not many people can answer that question first-hand. But among the things that $500 million will buy in 2020 are an NHL team and a 40% stake in the Buffalo Bills.

That’s according to CBS Sports, which looked into some items that quarterback Patrick Mahomes might be able to afford if he is paid the full $503 million he’s set to receive from the Chiefs thanks to a recent contract extension.

You may be wondering what Mahomes has bought since signing that extension. The answer: nothing, as he told CBS Sports.

“My dad texted me a couple days after the contract: ‘Do you feel any different?’ I said I feel exactly the same,” Mahomes told CBS. “I’m going to be the same person I was before I got the contract and before I got to the NFL — to be the best Patrick Mahomes I can be every single day.”

That attitude doesn’t surprise Chiefs offensive lineman Eric Fisher, who said Mahomes fits in with everyone, no matter what circle of teammates he happens to be with.

For a player who has won an NFL MVP award and was the Super Bowl LIV MVP trophy, that says a lot.

“Obviously, I’m in the huddle a lot with Pat and spend some time with him off the field,” Fisher said in an interview set up by Kingsford Charcoal. ”Hanging around with him and some of the guys, he’s a normal dude. And I’m sure he’s still gonna be a normal dude, and I think that’s really what makes him special. I’ve played with Alex (Smith) and Pat, and to be a starting quarterback in the NFL is quite a special honor.

“But Pat is such a genuine guy and he’s just been leading by example, which has been great for our team, and obviously Coach Reid sets all of us up for success. He’s been doing a great job and I look forward to the future with him.”

While Mahomes was given the largest contract in sports history in terms of dollars, Fisher is happier about the length of the deal.

It’s for 12 seasons and would keep Mahomes with the Chiefs through the 2031 season.

“Pat is deserving of every penny of it, and it’s awesome to see that he will be there for quite some time,” Fisher said. “I think getting a young quarterback as skilled as he is locked in for the foreseeable future, which I hope it’s the entire future, it’s pretty, pretty awesome.

“He’s just been such a tremendous leader on and off the field and a great guy in the community. He’s just the heartbeat of our team and he’s been a great example of what it’s like to be a professional quarterback, and to do that in such a young age, it’s pretty sweet to play with a guy like that.”

Although training camp is here (veterans were to report Saturday, July 25), Fisher has enjoyed his time off this summer. He’s been in touch with another teammate this summer about tips for their shared off-the-field passion: grilling.

Chiefs fans likely know that cooking is a passion for Mitchell Schwartz, but Fisher has been honing his skills, too. Fisher said his specialty is 3-2-1 ribs.

“Mitch Schwartz has been posting a lot of his stuff that he’s been making (on social media), so I’ve been bouncing ideas off of him and just honing in on my craft of the smoking,” Fisher said. “It’s been a good summer.”
