Kliff Kingsbury’s 2018 prediction about Patrick Mahomes came true this week

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had started all of one NFL game when his former college coach made a bold prediction.

While on the “The ThomaHawk Show” in April 2018, Kliff Kingsbury was asked how he thought Mahomes would do as the Chiefs’ new starting quarterback.

Kingsbury, who is now the Arizona Cardinals coach, was at that time coaching Texas Tech where Mahomes had played before being drafted by the Chiefs.

“His arm talent is the best I’ve ever seen, as far as just being able to throw from different platforms, different angles, off-balance, so I think the sky’s the limit,” Kingsbury told Joe Thomas and Andrew Hawkins.

“I got to watch him three years in practice and he just made throw after throw like, ‘How did he do that?’”

Although he wasn’t asked about future earnings, Kingsbury made a bold prediction for a player who was entering his second NFL season and had yet to throw a touchdown pass.

“I truly believe he’ll be the highest-paid player in the history of the game when his contract comes up,” Kingsbury said. “I think he’s that good.”

That prediction came true Monday when Mahomes signed a 10-year extension with the Chiefs that could be worth $503 million.

Here’s that conversation with Kingsbury:
