Royals’ playoffs wins from the 1980s and two big Chiefs 2019 games will air in July

Hopefully this will be the last month there will be a need for classic sporting events to fill the television schedule.

If that’s the case, there might not be a better slate of Kansas City sports classics fill the sports void before leagues begin play.

There are some great Royals and Chiefs games on the docket on Fox Sports Kansas City and CBS Sports.

Here’s a closer look.

Royals

All games will be on Fox Sports Kansas City.

Monday, 7 p.m.: Game 1 of 1980 ALCS. The Royals beat the Yankees 7-2 as Lary Gura outdueled Ron Guidry.

Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Game 2 of 1980 ALCS. Dan Quisenberry escaped a jam in the ninth inning and the Royals edged New York 3-2.

Wednesday, 7 p.m.: Game 3 of the 1980 ALCS. George Brett hit a really big home run and the Royals clinched the pennant with a 4-2 win over the Yankees.

July 9, 7 p.m.: Game 3 of the 1985 ALCS. Arguably Brett’s greatest game as he hit two homers and a double and helped the Royals beat the Blue Jays 6-5.

July 10, 7 p.m.: Game 5 of the 1985 ALCS. Danny Jackson pitched an eight-hit shutout as the Royals staved off elimination with a 2-0 win over Toronto.

July 11, 7 p.m.: Game 6 of the 1985 ALCS. Hal McRae had three hits and two RBIs in the Royals’ 5-3 win at Toronto.

July 12, 7 p.m.: Game 7 of the 1985 ALCS. Jim Sundberg missed a grand slam by about roughly an inch, but settled for a three-run triple that broke open the game and the Royals won 6-2.

July 14, 7 p.m.: Game 3 of the 1985 World Series. Frank White had a home run and three RBIs as the Royals won their first game of the series 6-2 in St. Louis.

July 15, 7 p.m.: Game 5 of the 1985 World Series. Danny Jackson threw a complete game, allowing just five hits to the Cardinals.

July 16, 7 p.m.: Game 6 of the 1985 World Series. Anyone remember the name of the first base umpire?

July 17, 7 p.m.: Game 7 of the 1985 World Series. Darryl Motley hit a two-run homer in the second inning and got the ball rolling on an 11-0 World Series clinching victory. An added bonus: watch the Cardinals lose their minds as the Royals ran up the score.

Chiefs

A pair of Chiefs games from the 2019 season will air this weekend.

Saturday at 6 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network: The Chiefs’ 23-16 win at New England from Dec. 8 will be shown. Bashaud Breeland batted away a pass from now former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to Julian Edelman to sew up the victory as the Chiefs clinched the AFC West title.

Sunday at noon on KCTV-5: The Chiefs’ 35-24 win over the Titans in the AFC Championship Game will air. Come for Patrick Mahomes’ electric touchdown run and stay for his bomb to Sammy Watkins that clinched the Chiefs’ spot in Super Bowl LIV.

Studio shows

Fox Kansas City’s “Royals Warmup” will air at 5:30 p.m. three times: Friday, July 10 and July 17. Joel Goldberg will be joined by Ryan Lefebvre, Rex Hudler and Jeff Montgomery as analysts as they discuss the 60-game season and take a closer look at the roster.

Sporting Kansas City’s pregame show will air for the three group stage games in Orlando on Fox Sports KC. There will be a postgame show for the July 22 game, too.
