Surgeon General of United States trolls Duke while making plea to wear masks
The Washington Post once picked the “Mount Rushmore of hated Duke players.” A Wall Street Journal story focused on the complicated politics of hating Duke. Author Paul Finebaum has written a book titled “I hate Duke: 303 reason why you should, too.”
It’s clear there is no love lost for the Blue Devils among college hoops fans.
And it seems the disdain for Duke basketball can be found even in the United States government.
Jerome Adams, the Surgeon General of the United States, trolled the Blue Devils during a news conference Tuesday about COVID-19.
Adams was imploring people to take safety measures, which included wearing a mask. He said it could mean the difference between sports starting sooner rather than later.
“Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently went out,” Adams said, per a White House transcript. “Maintain 6 feet of distance between you and others when you’re out. And please, please, please wear a face covering when you go out in public. It is not an inconvenience. It is not a suppression of your freedom. It actually is a vehicle to achieve our goals. It adds to your convenience and your freedom because it allows us to open up more places and it allows us places to stay open. When you do not wear your face covering, we end up in a situation where you see higher rates of disease spread and you end up having to close places. This mask, this face covering, actually is an instrument of freedom for Americans if we all use it.
“Young people, I just want to close by asking you to work with us, please. Work with us because I know that many of you feel like you’re not at risk or you’re not as high of a risk, but we need all of you to help protect the most vulnerable, but also to protect yourselves and to give you more options.
“If you want the return of college football this year, wear a face covering. If you want a chance at prom next spring, wear a face covering. I had an interview earlier with a North Carolina radio station; if you want to see North Carolina beat Duke in person this year, wear a face covering. And I grew up in Maryland and in Indiana, so sorry, Duke, but I — as long as somebody beats you, I’m OK with that.“
It’s fair to say Adams isn’t the only one who’s OK with Duke losing.
