The Royals plan to have plastic cutouts of fans in the stands at Kauffman Stadium
Even Nostradamus couldn’t have foreseen some of the things that have taken place in 2020.
We’ve already witnessed a global pandemic, a Saharan Dust Cloud, murder hornets and ... plastic fans.
Here’s the skinny on the last one: The 2020 Major League Baseball season, delayed because of COVID-19, is set to start later this month. Royals fans won’t be in the stands at Kauffman Stadium, but there still will be some friendly faces in the seats.
On Wednesday, the Royals announced a new Fanbassador program that will allow season-ticket holders “to order a hard-plastic cutout of their likeness that will be displayed in a seat at Kauffman Stadium during the 2020 season.”
The cutouts will be sold for $40 with an unspecified amount of that money going to the Royals Respond Fund, which the team described as “a Royals Charities effort that supports Kansas City area nonprofits who focus on food insecurity as it relates to the coronavirus pandemic.”
At first, the number of cutouts will be capped at 500.
You may have seen this done at German soccer games earlier this year. That idea has spread to leagues in other countries.
In South Korea, stuffed animals have been placed in the stands at baseball games while, gulp, sex dolls replaced fans at soccer games.
Those alternatives to fans make the plastic cutouts seem tame, right?
Royals’ season ticket holders will receive an email from the team about the cutout plan.
