People magazine’s 100 reasons to love America includes Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes
The first half of the year 2020 is officially behind us.
But it’s already been a year to remember (or forget) because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected 2.68 million people in the United States and led to the deaths of more than 128,000. The coronavirus also led a spike in the number of unemployed in this country.
Another reason: George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers on May 25 led to protests across the nation and ignited a call for racial justice and police reform that has resonated in cities small and large in the United States.
Under that backdrop, People magazine released its annual 100 reasons to love America list for 2020.
“In these unprecedented and challenging times, we can still applaud the nation’s ingenuity, optimism — and pursuit of equality,” People wrote in an introduction to its reasons to love America.
The list includes big things like Peaceful Protests and American Optimism. There are fun items like Foster Dogs and Quarantine Cocktails, too. And there are celebrities such as Billie Eilish, Harry and Meghan, and Brad Pitt.
This year’s list also includes a beloved figure in Kansas City: Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He is ranked 14th, between the book “Midnight Sun” and the Cuomo brothers.
Why should Mahomes, the MVP of Super Bowl LIV, be one of the reasons to love America?
“Considered by many to be the best player in the NFL,” the magazine wrote, “the 24-year-old quarterback led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.”
Chiefs fans will find it difficult to argue with that logic.
