Every player in English Premier League soccer game takes a knee after opening whistle

When a referee blows his or her whistle to begin a soccer game, the action usually starts immediately.

Not so on Wednesday in the English Premier League.

After the referee blew the whistle to start the Aston Villa-Sheffield United match, all 22 players on the field took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Ditto for the referee.

It was a powerful moment, and you can hear the referee’s whistle at the start of this video:

The players also wore “Black Lives Matter” on the back of their jerseys:
