Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be presenter for high school awards show

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick are teaming up.

That might be worded a bit too strong since they won’t be in the same room. However, Mahomes and Belichick are joining other sports stars for a USA Today high school sports award show on Thursday. It’s put on by Gannett Features, per businesswire.com, and will be a virtual presentation.

USA Today said more than 20 professional athletes will be award presenters, including Gary Woodland, Steph Curry, Rose Lavelle, Drew Brees, Venus Williams, Michael Phelps and Gabby Douglas.

Gannett owns USA Today and more than 40 other newspapers in cities from Amarillo, Texas, to Milwaukee to Hays, Kansas to Detroit. The award show will stream on each paper’s website and the name is being tweaked in each city to make it local.

The company originally planned for awards shows in 59 towns in April, May and June, Business Wire reported. But those have been rolled into one virtual show because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While not necessarily the headliner, Mahomes is one of the biggest names.

“We are thrilled that Patrick Mahomes, someone so near and dear to the South Plains and Texas Tech, will be participating in our awards event on June 18th,” Shoni Wiseman, general manager of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, said in a story last month. “We wanted to make sure that the broadcast awards show, which is replacing our live event this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, is extra special for the athletes, coaches and schools honored at our 3rd annual Lone Star Varsity High School Sports Awards event. ...

“Adding Mahomes as a presenter only heightens the excitement and anticipation for this event.”

Thursday’s show starts at 6 p.m. and can be seen here or the USA Today sports YouTube channel.
