Lorenzo Cain loved the ‘Cainholio’ memes fans made after 2015 Royals-White Sox brawl
Baseball players have long memories.
For instance, Lorenzo Cain was hit by a pitch from White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija in the Royals’ 2015 season opener. Cain, who was at the plate after a home run had been hit, stewed about it for weeks.
When the Royals and White Sox played in Chicago later in April, a brawl broke out and Cain sought out Samardzija. And that is how “Cainholio” was born.
Cain, the former Royals star, explained how he ended up looking like a “Beavis and Butt-Head” character during an interview Thursday on KCSP (610 AM).
“I ran in — I was already ready to go — I ran in and me and Samardzija were basically nose to nose and then as they say all hell broke loose after that,” Cain said.
“The next thing I know, I had somebody in a headlock and all I could feel was my jersey being pulled off my back. I could hear my jersey ripping while I’m on top of someone. That’s what I came out of the pile looking like ‘Cornholio’.”
“Cornholio” makes his appearance at about the 1:26 mark in the video and if you watch the whole thing, you can see “Samardzija vs. Cain” fueled a lot of the brouhaha:
“It was definitely not one of the funnest times being on the bottom of the pile, but at the same time, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” Cain said.
Cain was asked if Royals fans ever approached him and used the line, “I am the great Cainholio!” That, again, is from “Beavis and Butt-Head.”
“I think I heard it a thousand times,” Cain said laughing. “It was unbelievable.”
Memes popped up immediately on Twitter:
Cain has seen those memes.
“Yeah, I think it’s hilarious,” Cain said. “But like I said, I was on top of somebody, they were trying to pull me off of them and that’s how it ended.”
Cain also watches the brawl from time to time.
“Every time I see it or every now and then I’ll look back on it or a clip will pop up on my phone about it because I’ve seen it on YouTube and all that,” he said.
“I’m just happy no one got hurt but at the same time, it’s also a lot of fun just to look back on and just laugh.”
