Denver radio host: Patrick Mahomes is ‘the ultimate bogeyman’ for Broncos

In his short career, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a .774 winning percentage, having won 24 of 31 his regular-season starts.

That includes a 12-1 record against AFC West foes and a 5-0 mark against the Denver (that includes a game last season in which he left early because of a discloated kneecap).

Mahomes’ mastery of the Broncos is why Mike Evans, a radio host at 104.3 The Fan in Denver, is not quick to say the AFC West race is up for grabs despite the strong finish by the Broncos under Drew Lock.

Evans and Mark Schlereth, the former Broncos offensive lineman, have been breaking down film of an opponent, and they looked at the Chiefs’ loss to the Patriots in last year’s AFC Championship Game.

The duo dissected what the Patriots did to stop the Chiefs, and read some text from fans. Some of those Broncos supporters don’t want to make too much of the Chiefs’ recent dominance. Denver has lost nine straight to the Chiefs, dating back to 2015.

Evans was having none of it.

“There is this whistling past the graveyard mentality that I hear from a lot of Broncos fans, at least on the RamosLaw.com text line, that they don’t like the idea of building up the Chiefs as this bogeyman type thing,” Evans said. “And I’m sorry, but this is where you’re at right now.

“This team isn’t going anywhere. This head coach isn’t going anywhere. More importantly that quarterback isn’t going anywhere, and I know what some of you have tried to do, you’ve tried to diminish Mahomes’ impact by saying, ‘well, it’s more of the system than it is Mahomes’ or ‘Well, it’s more of the people that are around Mahomes than Mahomes.’”

That’s an argument that others have outside of Kansas City, and those fans note that the Chiefs offense was pretty darn good with Alex Smith throwing to wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce.

Thing is, Smith had a 1-4 record as the Chiefs starting quarterback in the postseason. Mahomes has a 4-1 record in the playoffs.

“If Drew Lock has two years in a row like, Patrick Mahomes has just had, and the Broncos have had the kind of success that the Chiefs have had, how many of you same Bronco fans who are saying it has very little to do with Mahomes are going to be going out of your way to say it has very little to do with Drew Lock?” Evans said. “Please don’t insult us, OK?

“So just acknowledge that that the Chiefs are the bogeyman, Mahomes is the ultimate bogeyman. And you better figure out a way to beat them. And to say ‘well it’s about our entire 16 game schedule, and not just two games,’ What it takes to beat the Chiefs is what it’s going to take to be a great team again. And if you think that this is going to become a great team for the next decade, and they can’t beat the Chiefs, it’s just not gonna happen.

“You’re not going to be an annual Super Bowl contender if you have to be a wild card every single year. You’ve got to find a way to beat the Chiefs, and that’s what this whole exercise is about.”

Here is the entire conversation and the talk of the Chiefs’ dominance over the Broncos begins at about the 12:40 mark:
