MLB makes new proposal about starting 2020 season, but one player scoffs at idea
According to Baseball Reference’s simulation, the Royals would have a 24-42 record at this point of the 2020 season.
The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in zero games being played that actually count, but Major League Baseball reportedly made another proposal to start the season.
According to multiple outlets, MLB’s idea would be a 76-game season with players receiving 75% of their prorated pay.
ESPN’s Karl Ravech was the first to report news of the MLB proposal, which would have regular-season games completed by Sept. 27 and playoffs done before Nov. 1:
It was the latest proposition after MLB and the players’ union had previously released plans. Here is the crux of what those proposals entailed (you can read more here):
- The owners had proffered an 82-game schedule starting in July with a sliding scale of pay for a player’s prorated salary. Seven teams would make the playoffs.
- The players’ union responded with a 114-game regular-season and no reduction of prorated salaries. The seven-team playoff field would be for 2020 and 2021.
After Monday’s proposal from Major League Baseball, Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen didn’t seem to embrace the latest idea. He shared this on Twitter:
The Athletic’s Evan Drellich offered some insight on how the newest MLB offer differs from the first:
CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa shared a breakdown that also showed how little the owners have moved on compensation to the players:
Joel Sherman of the MLB Network reported MLB plan would further expand the playoff field.
