NBC analyst predicts Patrick Mahomes’ next contract with Chiefs will dwarf all others
Although no one knows the exact dollar amount, there is agreement throughout the NFL that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ next contract will include a lot of zeroes.
That is to say, Mahomes is going to get a huge deal.
The question is: how big.
The Seattle Seahawks gave quarterback Russell Wilson a four-year extension worth $140 million, an average of $35 million per year. That’s the biggest contract in the NFL heading into the 2020 season.
But how long will Wilson be on top of the list?
The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson wrote last week that Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson could get an extension worth between $40 million and $42 million per season. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is hoping for a deal in that range.
So where does that leave Mahomes? We know he’s accomplished much in a short time.
In two full seasons as a starter, Mahomes has won a Super Bowl MVP award after helping the Chiefs win their first title in 50 years, and an NFL MVP award. Mahomes also is one of only three players in NFL history with 50 or more touchdown passes in a season.
Cris Collinsworth, who works as an analyst on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” thinks Mahomes’ next contract will dwarf any others.
“There’s no question he’s going to be the highest-paid player in the history of the league. I would be stunned honestly, and I don’t mean to work against the Kansas City Chiefs here, but if it comes in at anything less than $50 million (per year), I’d be really surprised,” Collinsworth said in an interview with Aaron Ladd of KSHB-TV (Ch. 41).
Earlier this month, Mahomes said he wasn’t worried about contract negotiations.
“For me, I think I’ve been in a unique situation where I’ve grown up getting to see a lot of guys go through contracts and doing a lot of different things, having the understanding of how it all works,” Mahomes said. “For me, obviously, I want to be a Chief for a long time. I want to have a contract that says that and that I can go out there and know that I have the security and everything like that, but I understand and trust the Chiefs organization and everybody in it that they’re going to handle it the right way.
“I trust my representation that they’re going to ease my mind and let me go out there and play the game that I love playing, so for me, whenever that happens, it happens.”
