Former NFL wide receiver says Chiefs’ defense is the most dangerous in the AFC

When the crew at “Good Morning Football” discusses the best attributes of AFC teams, it’s usually Peter Schrager, an unabashed Patrick Mahomes fan, who sings the Chiefs’ praises.

But when the discussion Monday on the NFL Network turned to the most dangerous defense in the AFC, it was former Vikings/Lions/Seahawks receiver Nate Burleson who talked up the Chiefs.

Schrager had picked the Steelers defense as the most dangerous, while Kyle Brandt chose the Chargers.

But Burleson thinks the Chiefs defense is overlooked and it’s a shame.

“I love the Kansas City Chiefs offense as we all do, but I feel like that defense, they are the unsung heroes,” Burleson said. “I’m going with the Chiefs defense. They don’t get enough respect in this league. Let me ask you a few did-you-knows. Did you know that they were seventh in the NFL in scoring defense? Did you know that they held teams to 19 points per game? Did you know that in four of the games during the regular season, they held teams to less than 10?

“And given the fact that Pat Mahomes can go off at any point like the healthy Golden State Warriors and put up 40 or 50 points, it’s pretty damn good that your team can hold a team under 20.”

Burleson also mentioned the comeback playoff victories, including Super Bowl LIV. People remember the offensive side of the things, but Burleson said the defense played a big part in those victories.

Here is what he said about the Super Bowl.

“They went down early and then all of a sudden we’re thinking to ourselves, ‘wait, wait, is that the 49ers celebrating on the sideline, it looks like this magical run for Pat Mahomes is about to end.’ Oh no it didn’t,” Burleson said. “That defense, yeah, they may have (bent), but they didn’t break. They were fantastic. They shut (it) down and gave Pat Mahomes the ball back, they forced two punts and then they went on to shut down and lock down the 49ers to ice the game. ...

“They’ve built something special on offense and on defense.”

Here is the full clip and Burleson talks at the 2:50 mark:
