For Pete's Sake

Wife of former Chiefs QB Alex Smith shares uplifting message, video of his workouts

Anyone who has seen the ESPN documentary “Project 11” knows former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is fortunate to be walking.

“Project 11,” which debuted Friday, detailed the aftermath of a horrific 2018 injury Smith suffered while playing for Washington. After surgery to repair a broken leg, four different bacteria infected Smith’s body.

That included a flesh-eating bacteria that required multiple surgeries and, as the documentary showed, left a bone in Smith’s lower leg visible.

Faced with the possibility of amputation, Smith instead had doctors move muscles from other parts of his body to where the bacteria had ravaged his leg. After a grueling recovery, Smith was able to fulfill one of his hopes: playing with his kids.

Smith, who is still under contract with Washington, hasn’t given up on playing football. A video posted on Instagram by his wife, Elizabeth, shows a workout he was doing.

Thursday is Smith’s 36th birthday, so she wrote: “Happy Happy Birthday to this handsome, hard working man❤️The last week we’ve been overwhelmed with love, support and sweet messages. We cannot thank you enough. #project11 was a look into what the last 18 months have been (mostly Alex refusing to give up). I am in awe of his perseverance everyday. He just keeps getting stronger and refuses to give up... Forever grateful”
