Once, a Dustin Colquitt prank had Chiefs thinking mountain lion stalked team facility

After the Chiefs released Dustin Colquitt on Monday, fans swapped their favorites stories of the punter on social media.

Most involved his charitable outreach, his kindness to fans and his game highlights.

But Ryan Petkoff, Senior Vice President of brand development and communications for the Hunt Sports Group, shared a story that showed Colquitt’s great sense of humor.

In 2011, Colquitt put a motion-activated camera behind the Chiefs practice facility to see if there were deer in the area.

It seems that Petkoff and Colquitt both like to hunt and have swapped photos. So when Petkoff sent Colquitt a photo of a mountain lion caught on camera at a Texas ranch, Colquitt saw an opportunity to have fun with his teammates.

“Dustin loves a good prank, so he starts showing guys in the locker room the picture claiming it was from his camera behind the practice facility,” Petkoff wrote. “Word starts spreading through the building that there’s a giant mountain lion stalking the Chiefs parking lot at night, and guys are literally running to their cars cause they’re terrified of the cat!!!”

It wasn’t only the Chiefs players who heard the story of the mountain lion. Todd Haley, the coach at the time, was asked at a news conference about the animal on the prowl.

“I’ve seen the pictures of that mountain lion, but I’ve heard a couple different rumors of how close it actually was to the vicinity,” Haley said with a half smile, as NFL.com reported. “But it’s got a lot of guys running to their car quick at night. The buddy system’s in use.”

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, a pair of mountain lions have been spotted in the Kansas City metro area, but none near the Chiefs facility.

But Colquitt had some players believing.

Here is Petkoff’s story:
