Tyrann Mathieu explained why Chiefs were smart to pick offensive player in first round
Chiefs players have been using the hashtag #RunItBack over the past couple of months, making it known their goal is a second straight Super Bowl title.
The Chiefs will return 20 of 22 starters from Super Bowl LIV. Those who won’t be back are linebacker Reggie Ragland, who signed with the Lions, and guard Stefen Wisniewski, who has joined the Steelers. Another key player, defensive back Kendall Fuller, signed with Washington.
With Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Damien Williams and Sammy Watkins all returning, it seemed the Chiefs didn’t need to use their first pick in Thursday’s NFL Draft on an offensive skill player.
Many mock drafts had the Chiefs taking a cornerback linebacker or defensive lineman.
And yet, the Chiefs drafted LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
That might seem like a strange choice to some, but Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu said it was a sound decision.
Mathieu tweeted: “You don’t invest in JP Morgan friends , you invest in JP Morgan. I.e Patrick Mahomes provides limitless amounts of potential so you load him up. For years!!!!! Watch the seed ( pat mahomes) produce fruit”
The bottom line: Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is so talented that surrounding him with as many playmakers as possible is only going to make Mahomes and the Chiefs offense that much better. That in turn makes the Chiefs as a whole better.

The team-first attitude resonated with a number of his Twitter followers, and Mathieu joked about it:
