Chiefs’ brass reveals Patrick Mahomes’ top choice in draft was Clyde Edwards-Helaire
The Chiefs’ decision-makers were all-in on LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire as the team’s first-round pick in Thursday’s NFL Draft.
That’s coach Andy Reid, general manager Brett Veach and ... quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
In a video call with Edwards-Helaire, Reid and Veach shared that bit of news.
“Hey listen, we’re fired up for you,” Reid said. “We asked Pat Mahomes, ‘Who do you want?’ and he picked you. How great is that? You better be ready to go.”
Edwards-Helaire said: “I’m ready to work, coach. You know that.”
“You’re always ready,” Reid said.
Veach said he texted Mahomes the news hours before the draft.
“Clyde, I told Clark (Hunt) and coach Reid that at about 4 o’ clock, Clyde was going to be our pick because coach and I were thinking your way,” Veach said. “And then when we texted Pat and I asked Pat, I said, ‘Give me a name,’ and I said, ‘Don’t think about it.’ And he said, ‘Clyde.’ And I said, ‘Well, good. Good.’ We’re excited, man.”
Twitter user Braiden Turner, who hosts a podcast call “Ain’t No Seats” shared this clip:
After the Chiefs’ pick was made on Thursday night, Mahomes tweeted this to show his excitement:
The Chiefs shared a longer version of the call with Edwards-Helaire, which included Hunt, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, running backs coach Deland McCullough and team president Mark Donovan.
Hunt quipped that the Chiefs have a pretty good offense and Bieniemy said “you just be ready to chop wood when that time comes.”
