For Pete's Sake

While watching ‘Last Dance,’ ex-Mizzou star Jon Sundvold shared a Michael Jordan story

Former Missouri basketball star Jon Sundvold was one of the 6.1 million people who tuned in Sunday night to watch the first two parts of ESPN’s documentary on former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan.

Sundvold was a first-round pick of the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1983 NBA Draft. A year later, Jordan was drafted by the Bulls, and he and Sundvold crossed paths in the NBA for eight seasons.

In addition to the SuperSonics, Sundvold also played for the Spurs and Heat. Their history actually goes back to college.

After winning the national championship in the spring, North Carolina opened the 1982-83 season with a pair of losses, including a 64-60 defeat at the hands of Mizzou and Sundvold. The game was at the Checkerdome in St. Louis, and Jordan scored 13 points, while Sundvold had 18.

That was the Tigers’ first game of the season and they were ranked 15th but jumped into the top 10 after downing the Tar Heels. North Carolina was a preseason No. 3 but fell to 15th.

After PowerMizzou publisher Gabe DeArmond brought up that game, Sundvold shared a story about how Jordan routinely checked in on the status of former Tigers coach Norm Stewart.

The next two episodes of the Jordan documentary will air this coming Sunday.
