Peter King’s mock draft includes ‘craziest rumor’ about potential Chiefs trade

If this proves true, Chiefs fans won’t have to wait until the very end of the first round to see their team’s pick in the first round Thursday’s NFL Draft.

NBC Sports’ Peter King shared his mock draft on Monday, and he has the Chiefs taking TCU cornerback Jeff Gladney with the 32nd pick.

However, King added some notes to his mock draft, and the first one is a doozy.

“Craziest rumor of the first round: Chiefs want to trade up for Henry Ruggs if he falls into the twenties. Insane. Do they want every sub 4.35 guy in the National Football League?” King wrote. “A couple of theories: There are only two very good cover corners in this draft, (Ohio State’s Jeff) Okudah and (Florida’s C.J.) Henderson, and they’d be long gone by the time the Chiefs could make a reasonable offer.”

Ruggs, who is 6-foot and 190 pounds, caught 40 passes for 746 yards and seven touchdowns this past season for Alabama. He also rushed for 75 yards in two attempts and a touchdown.

At this year’s NFL Combine, Ruggs had the fastest 40-yard time at 4.27 seconds. In his mock draft, King had Ruggs going to the Eagles at No. 21.

The Chiefs are returning their top receivers from a year ago: Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson. And they have tight end Travis Kelce, so why add another receiver?

King has a theory.

“Sammy Watkins is a short-termer, probably only one more year in KC, so another quick-twitch guy would fit either this year or next,” King wrote. “Finally, fast guys with slight builds who collide with defenders tend to get hurt, so Ruggs would be good insurance for that in 2020 and a stalwart beyond that.”
