Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., gives Twitter shout-out to Royals’ Whit Merrifield

When Major League Baseball returns, the current leader in consecutive games played will take the field for the Royals.

ESPN noted outfielder/infielder Whit Merrifield has played in 247 consecutive games, the longest current streak in baseball.

Merrifield tweeted a playful message:

That Cal is, of course, Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., the former Orioles star who holds the major-league record with 2,632 consecutive games played.

A week ago, Ripken joined Twitter and his ninth tweet was used to give Merrifield a shout-out via a video.

“I’d like to tell you it gets a heck of a lot easier after 300,” Ripken said with a laugh. “But anyway, I just wanted to say, I think it’s a great thing. Your team can count on you. I would hope that you continue it.”

Merrifield responded with a message about being excited to get back on the field:
