Defensive end who left Broncos is thrilled he won’t face Patrick Mahomes twice a year
After eight seasons in Denver, defensive end Derek Wolfe signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.
Wolfe told Mike Klis of 9News.com in Denver, he was thrilled to be out of the AFC West.
The reason? Patrick Mahomes.
“I mean I’m glad I don’t have to play against (Mahomes) twice a year now,’‘ Wolfe said. “Because he was such a huge pain in the ass. You’d get a lead on him and they’d still find a way to come back.
“(The Ravens) have such a good team all around. I’m excited to be part of another team that’s looking just like that.”
Wolfe, who had three sacks and 33 tackles in 12 games against the Chiefs, was a roommate with tight end Travis Kelce at the University of Cincinnati.
If all goes well for the Chiefs and Ravens, Wolfe could face Mahomes and Kelce twice in the 2020 season. The teams are scheduled to play in Baltimore and could meet in the playoffs, too.
The Ravens were 14-2 last year and the top seed in the AFC playoffs, and they have the reigning NFL MVP in Lamar Jackson.
“It’s just a great opportunity for me,” Wolfe said. “Step in there, go make some plays and try to win another Super Bowl. Really what I was looking to do in this free agency was get on a team that was going to contend because I had a feeling the Broncos were done and wanted to move on from me.”
